The “Sustainable climate investments” handbook analyzes the crucial role of sustainable finance in view of achieving climate targets, both in terms of integrating sustainability considerations into investment choices, and in financing mitigation and adaptation solutions.

Within the handbook, Etifor developed chapter 5.1 related to agriculture and forests. The first part of the chapter describes the deep interconnection between agriculture and forests and their complex relation with climate. On the one hand, the mitigation actions associated with these two sectors represent effective and strategic solutions to tackle the climate crisis (it is estimated that 29% of the CO2 released every year by human activities is absorbed by forests and other terrestrial ecosystems) but, on the other hand, the agriculture and forestry sector is today one of the main contributors of GHG emissions, with an estimated 24% of total emissions from human activities. The second part of the chapter highlights the investment opportunities related to these sectors in terms of climate change mitigation and adaptation, presenting a guideline for investors and an overview of the main support tools and certifications available.

The handbook was prepared by ItaSIF with inputs coming from a working group organised in collaboration with WWF and with the support of BPER Banca, Etica Sgr, Natixis Investment Managers and UBS Asset Management.

This volume presents a summary of the contributions to the workshop “Deforestation made in Italy” held in Padua on 10 December 2019. After framing the issue of deforestation and forest degradation, analyzing the main drivers and impacts, the document presents methodological approaches and preliminary results relating to the estimate of the embodied deforestation associated with the Italian import and consumption of deforestation-risk products: wood and derived products, agricultural products (beef, palm oil and soybean) and by-products (bovine hides and leather).

This is a first attempt to systematically and critically address the issue taking into account possible responsibilities of the Italian system – institutions, businesses, research, civil society and consumers: a potential starting point for further studies and critical reflections on this topic, with the hope that this will translate, with the collaboration of all, into concrete actions for the benefit of forest resources and human well-being. In recent decades Italian society has gradually lost sight of the importance of forests, a green lung that covers about 40% of the national territory.We have also forgotten how the national forest system, with its productive, environmental and socio-cultural chains, still represents a vital fulcrum of the country today. In this context, the first “Report on the state of Italian forests” (RAF – Rapporto sullo stato delle foreste e del settore forestale in Itali) was created to provide a global, detailed and accurate picture of the state of Italian forests and its chains. The article written by the Etifor team in collaboration with Davide Pettenella, professor at the University of Padua, presents a successful case study: Bosco Limite.

Most of the examples and case studies presented herein, therefore, are tailored to the Bangladesh context, but the general concepts, approaches and methods can be applied to a broad spectrum of situations.

The aim of this manual is to enhance understanding of ecosystem services and their valuation. The specific target group comprises governmental officers in planning units and field-level officers and practitioners in key government departments in Bangladesh responsible for project development, including the Ministry of Environment and Forests and its agencies.

Most of the examples and case studies presented herein, therefore, are tailored to the Bangladesh context, but the general concepts, approaches and methods can be applied to a broad spectrum of situations. This manual focuses on valuing forest-related ecosystem services, including those provided by trees outside forests. It is expected to improve valuation efforts and help ensure the better use of such values in policymaking and decision making.

Among other things, the manual explores the basics of financial mathematics; the main methods of economic valuation; examples of the valuation of selected ecosystem services; and inputs for considering values in decision making (the full abstract is available on FAO website)
