Context
The San Pietro in Gu area is home to numerous spring waters, vital sources for irrigation, drinking water, and biodiversity. However, many of these springs have disappeared or are in critical condition due to various factors, including intensive water withdrawals, the lowering of the Brenta River’s water level due to excavation activities, and reduced groundwater recharge. Additionally, climate change and extreme weather events are decreasing the flow of these springs, threatening the entire ecosystem.
Aware of their importance, the Municipality of San Pietro in Gu established the Museum of Springs in 2012 to promote conservation and raise public awareness. In 2020, it also joined Italy’s first Spring Water Agreement, a concrete commitment to sustainable management, pollution prevention, and biodiversity protection.
The project
The project involves various local institutions and aims to:
- Conserve and enhance the natural heritage of San Pietro in Gu, implementing environmental measures to protect four local springs.
- Educate and engage the local community about the importance of springs by organizing ecological days, biodiversity awareness events, and educational activities in schools.
- Promote a cultural shift by encouraging a responsible approach to land and resource management, generating tangible benefits for the entire community.
Our contribution
The Municipality of San Pietro in Gu has appointed Etifor to support the project through the following activities:
- Project coordination, facilitating meetings among partners and managing operational updates.
- Technical assistance in drafting the project proposal submitted to Fondazione Cariparo.
- Organization of a participatory planting event at Parco dell’Amicizia, involving private sponsors, schools, and local associations.
