Context

Giardini di Toscana has chosen to embark on a journey of environmental responsibility with the support of Etifor, aiming to contribute to a Climate Positive economy. In an industry where reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a priority, the company has decided to adopt a scientific and structured approach to measure and reduce its environmental impact while actively contributing to the protection of local forests.

The first step was to calculate the company’s carbon footprint for 2023, following the GHG Protocol standard. This assessment quantified direct emissions (Scope 1), indirect emissions from energy consumption (Scope 2), and indirect emissions across the supply chain (Scope 3). The results revealed a total emission of 358 tCO₂e, with 92% of emissions linked to the upstream supply chain, particularly material procurement (61.5%) and freight transport (28.2%).

The project

Based on these insights, Giardini di Toscana has launched a climate strategy to reduce its impact and actively contribute to climate change mitigation. With the support of Etifor’s MARC method, this pathway is structured into four key phases:

  • Measure: Annual monitoring of CO₂ emissions through the company’s Carbon Footprint assessment, with regular progress updates.
  • Avoid: Development and implementation of concrete emission reduction actions, such as sourcing glass produced with lower-impact technologies and joining DHL Go Green Plus, a shipping program that cuts emissions by up to 70% using biofuels.
  • Risks: Analysis of climate risks, both physical and related to the transition to a low-carbon economy, with a focus on supply chain sustainability.
  • Capture & Communicate: Investments in nature-based solutions with WOWnature, supporting the protection of the Rincine Forest (FI) and the creation of new forests such as Bosco Cinque Querce (SI), where 100 trees were planted in 2024.

Our contribution

We support Giardini di Toscana throughout every stage of this journey, ensuring a scientific and transparent approach. Specifically, we have:

  • Measured the company’s carbon footprint following the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard.
  • Developed an emission reduction plan based on cost-benefit analysis.
  • Identified credible and certified environmental initiatives, including reforestation and forest conservation projects.
  • Provided transparent communication tools, such as certificates, GPS monitoring of reforested areas, and a dedicated WOWnature page.

Giardini di Toscana’s goal is to contribute to a Climate Positive economy by 2040, capturing 110% of its emissions. The company’s plan includes continuous greenhouse gas monitoring and an ongoing commitment to mitigating and communicating its environmental impact.
