Context
Bosco Cinque Querce, located on the northeastern edge of the Municipality of Siena, is a renowned ancient forest needing action to preserve and enhance its ecosystem services. Owned by the Rugani-Bencini family since 2020, the forest requires sustainable management to restore abandoned areas, reduce soil erosion, and increase biodiversity. The goal is to transform this space into an ecological management model that offers environmental, economic, and social benefits and welcomes visitors, athletes, and nature lovers.
The project
Since 2022, Bosco Cinque Querce has partnered with Etifor and WOWnature to develop a sustainable natural resource management system. The main activities include designing and implementing phyto-purification interventions for water management, structural rehabilitation of the forest, reduction of soil erosion, and increased biodiversity. The creation of a food forest began in 2023 by planting more than 2,000 new trees, including more than 30 edible tree and shrub species, such as pear, apple, elderberry, and blackthorn. These interventions aim to transform the forest into an example of sustainability and ecological resilience.
Our contribution
Etior plays a crucial role in the project, providing technical and strategic support for all phases of sustainable management of the Bosco Cinque Querce. We worked on designing, co-financing and implementing the forest restoration and development activities. Thanks to our experience, planning and implementing innovative solutions for water management, phyto-purification, soil erosion reduction and biodiversity enhancement was possible. Etifor, together with WOWnature, facilitated the adoption of trees by businesses and citizens, demonstrating how an integrated and sustainable vision can maximize the benefits provided by nature.
