How can forest ecosystem services (FES) contribute to the new European strategies for forests?

On the 30th of March 2022, the event “Looking to the future for forest ecosystem services in Europe” will try to answer this question and others related to the recent developments in the European forestry sector.

The event is organised by SINCERE and NOBEL, two European research and innovation projects working in the field of FES. Specifically, SINCERE supports research and innovation to integrate the demand for FES with a sustainable and profitable forest management approach. Etifor is one of the project partners of SINCERE and is responsible for one of the Innovative Actions illustrating possible mechanisms for the valorisation of forests.

The online event will present conclusions and recommendations based on the work, experiences, and findings on the implementation of FES of the two projects. The output presented during the event are indeed the culmination of the project activities. Presentations will involve different topics, from policy options to innovative business models for FES. In particular, the programme includes:

  • Governing Europe’s forests for multiple ecosystem services: opportunities, challenges, & policy options – Key points of the SINCERE-NOBEL policy brief
    Georg Winkel, University of Wageningen
  • Payments for Environmental Services – possibilities of wider adoption in Europe
    Sven Wunder, European Forest Institute
  • Auction games and Forest Management: collaboration and competition for payments for ecosystem services
Harald Vacik, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU)
  • Upscaling potential & innovative business models for forest ecosystem services
    Thomas Lundhede, University of Copenhagen

Even though the event mainly target policy- and decision-makers, scientists, forest owners and managers, entrepreneurs, and civil society representatives, anyone is welcomed to participate.
