Context
The Brenta River and its wetlands represent one of the most important ecosystems for biodiversity in the Veneto region. The Natura 2000 site “Grave e Zone Umide della Brenta” hosts a variety of species of fauna and flora of community interest, but anthropogenic pressures and climate change threaten their survival. The MAP-Brenta project is promoted under the NBFC research program, funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), with the goal of strengthening the management and conservation of this important ecosystem. Through thorough scientific analysis and active participation from the local community, MAP-Brenta aims to fill existing knowledge gaps and define targeted conservation and restoration interventions.
The project
MAP-Brenta focuses on monitoring and conservation actions for species of community interest within the Natura 2000 site ZSC/ZPS IT3260018, an area that includes the wetlands and grave of the Brenta River. The project aims to:
-
Fill knowledge gaps on community interest species, such as fish communities, amphibians, and bats, through detailed monitoring to collect crucial data on these species and their conservation needs.
-
Evaluate the effectiveness of restoration interventions carried out by the LIFE Brenta 2030 project, analyzing the community interest habitats to determine if the interventions have had a positive impact.
-
Improve river continuity through pre-feasibility studies for overcoming the Limena and Campo San Martino weirs, creating fish migration passes.
-
Engage the local community in monitoring natural emergencies and mapping invasive alien species, promoting citizen science activities through guided tours.
-
Strengthen the management capacity of the Brenta Basin Authority by preparing a medium-term financial plan for the implementation of conservation and environmental restoration measures, based on the results of the monitoring activities.
Our contribution
Etifor supports the MAP-Brenta project through the implementation of scientific monitoring practices and the management of local community involvement. Using our LUCAS approach for the Nature Positive transition, we help map biodiversity risks and opportunities, contributing to the creation of intervention plans based on solid data. Additionally, we are responsible for developing a financial plan for resource management, aiming to ensure the long-term sustainability of the proposed conservation and restoration measures.
Our commitment to MAP-Brenta represents an important step toward the protection of the Brenta wetlands, a fundamental ecosystem for the region’s biodiversity and climate resilience.
