On 24 May, the conference “The Sustainable Development of Tropical Forests” will be held as part of the 7th edition of the Festival dello Sviluppo Sostenibile (“Sustainable Development Festival”), Italy’s largest event on sustainability, promoted by ASviS. The Festival raises awareness and mobilises citizens, younger generations, businesses, associations and institutions on the issues of economic, social and environmental sustainability. The aim of the event is to promote a cultural and political change that will enable Italy to implement the UN 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In this context, the Italian Embassy in Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo – DRC) organised the hybrid conference titled “The Sustainable Development of Tropical Forests”. The event will focus on the Goal “Responsible Consumption and Production” (SDG12) and, in particular, on the protection of forests and their environmental impact. Today, the DRC’s forests represent 10% of the world’s forest resources: its protection is therefore crucial not only in a national or regional context, but also globally. The conference will also be attended by Davide Pettenella (University of Padua), Elena Massarenti and Lucio Brotto (Etifor), who will speak about the role of the University of Padua in the research, training and sustainable development of the forestry sector in the DRC, as well as possible markets for Forest Ecosystem Services.
Finally, the conference will also see the participation of RES4AFRICA, the CNR of Trento and CIFOR. Etifor is currently working with CIFOR on the development of the artisanal wood supply chain, within the FORETS project in Yanonge (DRC). Within the project, Etifor is in charge of supporting the legal and sustainable development of the supply chain and carrying out market surveys to orientate the production and access new markets. In addition, Etifor is involved in promoting sustainable forest management practices to protect the resources of local village communities.
