Integrating ecosystem services measurement into sustainable forest management
On June 22 and 23, an important step towards responsible forest management was taken in Luvinate (VA) with the conference “Forest Certification and Carbon Monitoring”.
The event was organized by the Municipality of Luvinate in collaboration with some of the leading Italian experts in the field: CREA, ETIFOR, Department of TESAF at the University of Padua, and FSC® within the framework of the LIFE ClimatePositive project. A training and discussion opportunity for the research community and forest technicians, that took place both in the classroom and in the forest, specifically in the Campo dei Fiori Regional Park, one of the pilot areas of the project, at ASFO Valli delle Sorgenti (a local landowners association).
In the field work several operational issues of great importance for forest technicians were addressed, including:
- Calculation of carbon stock in a forest and the subsequent generation of carbon credits.
- Application of the Potential Biodiversity Index as a tool to guide future management decisions.
- Requirements for obtaining FSC® certification for responsible forest management and the subsequent verification of positive impacts on ecosystem services.
These two highly attended days will soon be replicated in other areas of the LIFE ClimatePositive project, aiming to provide training and directly involve those who work with our forest ecosystems on a daily basis.
LIFE ClimatePositive is a project launched in 2023 with the contribution of the European Union’s LIFE financial instrument. It promotes SMART partnerships and innovative funding for responsible forest management and the enhancement of carbon sequestration capacity.

The event titled “Certificazione Forestale e Monitoraggio del Carbonio – il modello Campo dei Fiori per il futuro della gestione boschiva italiana” (trad. Certification and Carbon Monitoring – the Campo dei Fiori model for the future of Italian forest management) took place on 22 and 23 June 2023 at the Social Centre of Luvinate (VA, Italy) and hosted the project partners Etifor, FSC® Italia, CREA Foreste e Legno, CREA Politiche e Bioeconomia, University of Padua – Dept. of TESAF. It was an opportunity to learn about the Campo dei Fiori Park experience and strengthen skills on how to integrate the measurement of ecosystem services in sustainable forest management.
The event participates in the continuing professional education programme of Agronomists and Foresters for 0.5 credits for participation in the public event on the 22nd morning and 1.5 credits for participation in the technical session on the 22nd and 23rd, for a maximum of 10 ODAF members with reference to CONAF Regulation no. 162/2022.
